There are many ways to point a domain address to another domain or subdomain and one of them is by creating a CNAME record. In case you own a domain name and you've set up a site through some online service which provides you with a service subdomain, you could easily link the two by creating a CNAME record for your-domain.com that directs to subdomain.provider.com. What you're going to achieve by doing this is that www.your-domain.com will be in the browser address bar while it opens the already mentioned website from the servers of the third-party provider. It is important to know that if you set up a CNAME record, any other records your domain name may have will stop functioning, so you can't have both a CNAME record directing to one company and working e-mail address with another one. The CNAME record is always an alpha string, not a number, and often additional configuration may be required with the other provider.

CNAME Records in Shared Hosting

If you have a shared hosting plan through our company and you want to create a CNAME record, it will take you just a few mouse clicks to do it. You can access the DNS records for all domains and subdomains hosted inside your account via the Hepsia CP offered with every single plan and adding a new record is as basic as clicking on a button, selecting the type, which will be CNAME in this case, typing the actual record value and saving the modification. If you've never added this sort of record before, you will find a Help section with a detailed video tutorial which you can watch, or you can simply contact us and we'll assist you with this task. If you have set up an Internet site via another company, you want to use a private URL for your webmail or you wish to designate a subdomain to be used with the services of a different provider, like Google Apps, all it takes is creating a CNAME record with a couple of clicks within your Control Panel.
